L’astrattismo è un’esperienza artistica nata nei primi anni del XX secolo, in zone d’Europa lontane tra loro, dove si sviluppò senza intenti comuni. Il termine indica quelle opere pittoriche e plastiche che esulano dalla rappresentazione oggettiva della realtà.
Fondamentali furono le esperienze fauvista e cubista: la prima esaltava lo stato d’animo dell’artista attraverso l’uso non tradizionale del colore, mentre il secondo perseguiva la semplificazione delle forme secondo l’ordine della geometria.
Quello dell’astrattismo è il momento apice dell’uomo , del suo processo raziocinante in cui dall’analisi del particolare egli accede alla sintesi universale superando con un balzo d’intuizione ogni effetto spazio-temporale.
La capacità di visualizzare realtà non concrete, l’immaginazione attraverso la quale si possono “vedere” e materializzare ad esempio numeri, facce nascoste di figure, pezzi mancanti di connessioni corrette con le regole del reale, scenari travalicanti il mondo sensoriale, sono peculiari degli artisti in genere, in quanto si sforzano di superare le immagini mentali frutto della memoria sensoriale, cercando di raffigurare in termini concreti e leggibili concetti astratti e sfuggenti.
Dopo la rivoluzione espressionista, è concetto comunemente diffuso che l’arte nasca non tanto da una interpretazione del reale quanto da un distanziamento da esso, ed è proprio l’arte moderna ad aver sancito definitivamente il distacco dell’arte dagli eventi naturali, facendo di questo distanziamento una delle sue caratteristiche principali.
Questo concetto di arte intesa come fuga dalla realtà, come rifugio mentale dove ciò che viene psicologicamente censurato viene estromesso dalla rappresentazione, è ribadito da Paul Klee quando afferma: “Quanto più è orrendo questo mondo, proprio come avviene oggi, tanto più è astratta l’arte, mentre un mondo felice produce soltanto un’arte immanente”.
